Protecting yourself online

I recently received an email from someone who read my coverage on the debate surrounding campus sexual assault policies. She recommended I share an Internet Safety Guide from VpnMentor.com that seeks to empower people to prevent and combat online harassment.

While the guide was written, “by women for women,” it contains information that will be useful for all regular users of Twitter, Facebook, or other social media platforms.

The team that assembled the guide also discuss several types of online and in-person sexual harassment. Many people hold strong opinions on these topics, and you may not agree with the all of the guide’s social commentary. But it has lots of useful information about social media sites that everyone can learn from.

The in-depth guide addresses how to protect your privacy, report abusive activity, and protect yourself from hacking. Everyone has their own preferences for how they want to interact online, and you may choose not to act on all of their advice.

But with so much of our personal and social life taking place online, it’s always good to have a thorough understanding of  the platforms we use to communicate with friends, family, and others.

If you have time, give it a look.
