Women’s Health Protection Act

Pro-choice lawmakers are advocating for a proposed federal bill that would protect abortion rights nationwide.

The Women’s Health Protection Act seeks to block state laws that limit the right of a pregnant woman to obtain an abortion.

The bill has taken on new importance after the U.S. Supreme Court recently allowed a Texas law to take effect that effectively bans abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.

I read and discussed the Women’s Health Protection Act on Primary Sources, a podcast where I examine the documents behind today’s top stories.

Supreme Court allows Texas anti-abortion law to take effect

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court issued a ruling on its shadow docket to explain its decision to allow a restrictive anti-abortion law to take effect in Texas.

The 5-4 ruling in Whole Woman’s Health v. Jackson, which generated significant controversy, included four separate dissents from each of the opposing justices.

The case concerns a Texas law that effectively ends the right of a pregnant person to choose whether to obtain an abortion after six weeks of pregnancy.

I read and discussed the Supreme Court decision, and its dissents, on the first episode of Primary Sources, a podcast where I examine the primary sources behind today’s biggest stories.
