The Kansas 2nd: Occassionally Competitive

 

In the Kansas second congressional district, Topeka Mayor Michelle De La Isla (D) is running against Kansas State Treasurer Jake LaTurner (R).
 
The Kansas second congressional district is located in the eastern part of the state, and it includes Topeka and Lawrence. 
 
Nancy Boyda was the most recent Democrat to represent the 2nd district. She served in Congress in 2007 and 2008. 
 
In 2008, Lynn Jenkins (R) beat Nancy Boyda (D) in the general election by 4%.
 
In 2010, Lynn Jenkins (R) beat Cheryl Hudspeth (D) in the general election by 31%. Robert Garrard (L) received 4.5% in that election.
 
In 2012, Lynn Jenkins (R) beat Tobias Schlingensiepen (D) in the general election by 18%. Dennis Hawver (L) received 4.2%.
 
In 2014, Lynn Jenkins (R) beat Margie Wakefield (D) by 18%. Chris Clemmons (L) received 4.3%.
 
In 2016, Lynn Jenkins (R) beat Britani Potter (D) by 28.4%. James Bales (L) received 6.5%.
 
The 2018 general election in the Kansas 2nd US Congressional District was close. Steve Watkins (R) beat Paul Davis (D) by 0.85%. Kelly Standley, a Libertarian candidate, received 5.6% in that race. 
 
The Republican candidate has won the last 6 elections in the Kansas 2nd Congressional District. The Republican candidate wins on average by 17%.
 
FiveThirtyEight considers this year's race in the Kansas 2nd to be a Likely Republican win. Their model predicts LaTurner (R) will win by a margin of 10%.
